Bringing Indigenous youth together through hockey
ARC values working closely with Indigenous communities near our operations and supporting causes that contribute to their health and well-being. Investing in youth sport offers an excellent way to do just that.
This summer, ARC was pleased to partner with Mark’s Hauling, Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Duncan’s First Nation, Horse Lake First Nation, and other local businesses, to offer more than 70 Indigenous youth ages 7 to 16, the opportunity to hit the ice and learn to play hockey. We provided $5,000 worth of “Goodie Bags” for all participants and three employees volunteered their time to help run the camp.
Over two days, youth from Grande Prairie and surrounding communities honed their on-ice skills and had some fun learning a sport that has strong ties to Indigenous culture in Canada. Players were treated to on-and-off ice sessions with volunteer coaching staff, special guest speakers and warm camp meals served by volunteers. The camp culminated with a special final game day experience which included a professional announcer, official scoreboard, and some friendly competition. Following the camp, players from Horse Lake First Nation and Sturgeon Lake First Nation faced off in an exciting game with a 10-9 overtime finish.
