A time to learn and reflect

As we recognize the significance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the importance of building strong relationships with local Indigenous Peoples and communities.

ARC has been privileged to operate in the traditional territories of Treaty 6, Treaty 7, and Treaty 8 First Nations and Métis people for the last 25 years. We appreciate our partnerships, all the knowledge that has been shared, and recognize there is much more to learn.

The news of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc discovery and those that followed, has impacted us all and serves as an important reminder this is part of our shared history. September 30th, previously known as Orange Shirt Day, is a day to learn about and reflect on the history of residential schools, and their impact on Indigenous communities in Canada.

Commemorating the day

From engaging with communities to increasing our awareness of Indigenous history and culture, there are many actions we can take to contribute to a positive future. This year, ARC has contributed to three local organizations that support Indigenous Peoples in nearby communities:

In addition, ARC employees are encouraged to participate in local virtual events to deepen their understanding of the impacts of residential schools, and to learn more about Indigenous cultures in Canada.

Building a stronger and more inclusive Canada

Recognizing the meaning behind Orange Shirt Day, investment in education and community development programs is more important than ever. ARC is honoured to support Indigenous education through scholarships with our partnership with Indspire and local initiatives like the Indigenous Youth Hockey Camp in Grande Prairie. Moving forward, we will continue to find ways to learn, support and strengthen relationships with local Indigenous Peoples and communities and do our part to build a stronger and more inclusive Canada.
